San Saturnino, o San Cernin como se le denomina en occitano, fue obispo de Toulouse (Francia) a mediados del siglo III. Poco sabemos de su vida anterior a su episcopado.
Desarrolló una actividad misionera en el sur de la Galia y en diversas regiones hispanas. Así, según narra la tradición local, envió a su discípulo San Honesto de Nimes a Pamplona para anunciar el Evangelio. Después fue él mismo quien vino hasta esta ciudad donde convirtió a los primeros cristianos, entre los que se encontraba San Fermín, que llegaría a ser el primer obispo de Pamplona. Todavía se conserva el pozo donde los bautizó, situado en la confluencia de las calles San Saturnino, Mayor y Jarauta.
Tras regresar a Toulouse, San Saturnino fue detenido por los paganos en el capitolio, acusado de que su predicación había hecho enmudecer a los falsos oráculos. Al negarse a adorar a los ídolos paganos, fue atado por los pies al rabo de un toro, preparado para los sacrificios. El animal lo arrastró escaleras abajo desde lo alto del capitolio hasta su muerte martirial, acaecida un 29 de noviembre hacia el año 250. Por ello en la iconografía aparece con las insginias espicopales (mitra y báculo) junto a un toro.
Pamplona, agradecida por haber traído la fe cristiana a sus habitantes, lo venera desde antiguo como su patrono, y de modo oficial desde 1611.

Tradizioaren arabera, bere diszipulu Honesto bidali zuen aurretik Nimes-tik Iruñera Ebanjelioa aldarrikatzera. Geroago San Saturnino bera etorri zen hiriburu honetara. Hemen konbertitu zituen aurreneko kristauak; eta hauen artean San Fermin, gero Iruñeko lehenengo apezpiku izango zena. Konserbatzen da oraindik ur-putzua, non aurreneko kristauak izan ziren bataiatuak. Dago kokatua San Saturnino, Mayor eta Jarauta kaleen elkargunean.
Toulousera itzuli zenean, atxilotu egin zuten Ebanjelioa iragartzen zuelako predikuaren bitartez. Gero, idolo jentilak ez adoratzeagatik, zezen baten isatsari lotuta kapitolioko eskalinata behera arrastatua izan zen. Horrela, martiri bezala hil zen 250. urtean inguru, azaroaren 29an.

Saint Saturnin or Saint Cernin as he is called in Occitan, was the first bishop of Toulouse in the middle of the third century.
According to local tradition, he sent his disciple Saint Honestus of Nimes to Pamplona to proclaim the Gospel.
